How long does a typical basement or cellar conversion take?

Every basement conversion is different.  On average, the work can take between four and twelve weeks to complete but timescales will be agreed at the time of quotation.

What kind of room could my basement become?

Depending on the shape and size of your basement, STONEDRY could convert it into a kitchen, living room, dining room, bedroom, home cinema, home studio, games room, study or even a bar. It’s your choice the possibilities are endless!

Why is a basement conversion better than a loft conversion or extension?

Your basement or cellar is a space you already have. If it’s wet or flooded, you may not wish to use it for storage, so why not put it to practical use, give yourself valuable extra space and increase the value of your home at the same time? Unlike a loft conversion, you already have access, so there’s no need to free up space for a staircase. Also, there is no need to build dormer windows, etc.

Additionally, because it’s space you already have you won’t need to extend out into your garden or driveway. Better still, you rarely need planning permission. And it can work out much cheaper, so you’re onto a winner all-round.

My cellar has no windows, or just a small window. How will you make it appear bright and airy?

Clever use of lighting can transform the darkest basement or cellar into a bright and light living space – even if there are no windows.

My cellar is very damp and mouldy. It’s very hard to ever picture it as a bright, dry, odour-free living space. Can you convince me this is what I will get?

Take a look at our ‘portfolio‘ pages – you’ll be amazed at the difference between the before and after photographs.

How can I be sure the dampness will not seep through the membrane?

We use the world’s most technically advanced membranes which, when installed correctly have been proven to last for the lifetime of the building.

Cavity membranes are now the accepted way of waterproofing damp, wet or flooded rooms like basements or cellars, and the products we use carry a 30 year guarantee.

How do you dry out a wet, flooded or mouldy basement?

Excess water is pumped out of the basement, but other than that, we don’t strictly ‘dry’ your basement or cellar. This is because the nature of a subterranean room makes it virtually impossible to achieve a stone dry finish. Water or damp will always seep in.

The way we do it is to insert a high density Polyethylene Cavity Drain Membrane which acts as a kind of envelope behind which the ground water enters as normal before being collected and efficiently dealt with.

Cavity Drain Membranes are completely impervious to water, chloride salts, nitrates, etc – like a kind of ‘room within a room’. In fact they’re so reliable and efficient they’re used by organisations like the London Underground in tube station.

The membrane is quick and easy to install and also comes with a 30 year guarantee. Decoration doesn’t need to be delayed because there is no drying process.
